When I originally studied psychology it was for my own benefit. To understand my human condition, perhaps find some answers. Because after all the planet is full of one thing, it's humans. And of course animals, and perhaps even more so insects, loads of them. But I had it in mind, psychology was conceived to be for helping people, it was honourable. More than honourable, psychology by its very existence would be moralistically right of all the scientific subjects in the world. It was there to help and understand humans. Later I found myself becoming more sceptical. The more I learnt the greater this scepticism became. Perhaps I chose the wrong type of psychology to learn, or perhaps I was awoken.
Therefore I think Psychology sold its self. It has sold out from this moralistic high ground. It is sold to businesses and organsiations in the notion it will make them better. Improve them, make them more productive or efficient or person friendly. These business psychologists.call themselves Management Consultants. However also under this description are a number of other groups, like the MBA's of this world, thinking they have an inside knowledge of how an organisation should be run. The Occupational Psychologists have simalar ideas. In reality, for the consultant what matters is their own pocket. They sell a service. They then advertise they worked for this company or that company and this is added to their CV of achievements. However, unlike the psychological studies learnt in earlier years, the ones which ask about validity and relaibility. Their selling out, is not measured. Only perhaps in the bucks they make for themselves.
So it is with much dissappointment I mark Management Consultants and Occupational Psychologist on the higher steps of the ladder for selling out. Like anything else, as the question "what are they getting out of this?"
